To enable the sound to be recorded successfully film had to be transported in a much more linear fashion in the 1014XLS, and as such the camera lost a lot of the photographic capabilities over the much more versatile 1014E.

The 1014E is a much nosier camera but has a noticeably better slow motion. It also allows variable length dissolves and dissolves to and from differing frame rates. You can dissolve out with an intervalometer firing a single frame every 10 seconds (say) and the dissolve in scene can be at 60 fps.

The 1014E also allows double exposures and has the facility to fine tune the exposure using the shutter sector dial and the aperture correction slider (the 3 position switch). It also allows variable speed fades (in and out).

As prestriped film is no more the only reason to go for the XLS version is the camera's silence (though it is by no means a quiet camera) and the XL shutter sector. In my view it looses the race.

Tom, I agree with you on the limited slo-mo capability of the XL-S version which is just 36 fps, but as for the rest, the latest version of the camera features all the possibilities you have mentioned except the intervalometer: the 1014 XL-S too has a variable shutter angle that can also be used for fades and dissolve, even in AE Lock Mode, which is something that not even the Nizo 6080 can do. Also the 1014 features a silicon photocells for the built-in exposure meter and a five balde iris, consistent with Canon's photographic values and tradition.

I'd like to have a 'real' slo-mo on this camera, but as for the other features, I wouldn't say the older 1014 has the edge in all and every respect over the XL-S.
It's just a matter of what your priorities are.

Which 1014 is the best? Is the XL-S the top of the line for Canon?

    Thanks smile
